Made for the age where big costumes are a gamble
A mascot costume is a lot of character to put in front of a two-year-old. Our Teddy Bear is the one we send when the guest of honour is very small: the performer moves slowly, kneels to child height, and lets children come to the bear rather than the other way round. Nobody is picked up, and nobody is made to hug anything.
That makes it the usual choice for first and second birthdays, toddler rooms at daycares, and family parties where there is a wide age spread and a couple of nervous little ones. Older children still get the dance games — the pace just starts gentler.
If a child is frightened, tell the performer. The bear will wave from across the room and carry on with the rest of the group. We would far rather that than a photo nobody enjoys.
